August Queen Bee Block - Carolyn

Hi All!  Dropping in to share the project that Carolyn chose for her Queen Bee block this month.  She chose a hexagon block.  Fear not, you don't have to make it in triangles or anything fancy.

At the meeting she handed out a template to each member and a small bag of fabrics to jump start the color choosing process for each member. If you were not there and are participating we will share the info of the block.

Each hexagon has a monochromatic color scheme, but can have other colors in it as long as the block reads one color.

The first block by Carolyn reads pink, but has green, yellow, brown, and blue in it.

 This block reads more along the lines of green, but includes blue.

The block Rose completed is clearly blue, but includes touches of yellow, green, and orange.  Even a fish is included.  

The measuremenets of the hexagon are 14.5" flat side to flat side, 16.5" point to point across, and 8.5" along the side.

If you are participating and would prefer to wait until the next meeting to get a template and some fabrics to catch up that is ok, Carolyn will bring a few extras with her.

Double Wedding Ring Challenge

The Double Wedding Ring Challenge is a challenge hosted by the NYC Mod Quilt Guild

Here is the link to their official rules.  The NYC Mod Quilters partnered with EZ Quilting/Simplicity, Interweave, and Juki for this awesome challenge.

You use the template or pattern for the double wedding ring quilt and make a fun quilt any way you like.

There are three categories:

Small - 1 ring under 20"
Traditional - 4 rings or more with a traditional pattern, style, and fabrics.
Modern - 4 rings or larger, anything goes!

There are some amazing prizes, you have to head over to the NYC Mod Quilters post to check them out.

Images must be uploaded to the NYC Mod Quilters post by December 1st. 

MQG Fabric Challenge

The fabric challenge has been announced!  Wohoo!!

Riley Blake is sponsoring it.  Here is the post from our Mama guild about it.  Riley Blake is providing each member of the MGQ with 6 fat eights of these great fabrics from their basics collection.
Since we are a guild membership, Diane and I will take care of the signups.

Guidelines (From the MGQ post)

• The challenge runs from September 2013-December 2013.
• Members can make anything they want as long as it is quilted!
• Add in any solids or Riley Blake printed fabric.
• You do not need to use all the fabrics given to you.
• Upload and share your photos to the Fabric Challenge Forum on the Community site.
• MQGs can create guild specific challenges, as long as the other guidelines are upheld.
• Don’t forget to use the #mqgrileyblakechallenge on Instragram and Twitter!
• See the members Community site for sign ups.
• Fabric sign ups end Aug 31st, 2013

Since we are a guild membership, Diane and I will take care of the signups.  

I don't know about you, but I am so excited about this challenge.

July Meeting Recap

Hi ladies!  I am making sure to get this up before our August meeting.

We had a fun, warm, meeting this month.  Diane did an amazing de-stash and I think we all left with a few goodies.  I didn't even make it to my seat before I slipped an amazing pink fabric into my bag (the same one Diane used in her show and tell).

We are still working on getting the guild set up with the Mama guild.

Show and Tell

 Diane made this awesome pink quilt using the one block wonder technique.  (Totally in love with this pink fabric!)

She also showed off her firework blocks which is her block for this month.  

 Rose showed us her triangle quilt that she is working on, this will be a full size when completed.

 

Kat shared with us these two quilts.  Her quilts are slways so intricate and interesting.  The maze looks great, I wonder what other colors that would work with.  (Maybe greens?)

 

Mary shared with us her quilt she made with cashmere sweaters that she had collected.  This quilt was so soft and warm, the perfect quilt to snuggle under and read a book.  She quilted each block separately in it.  

Carolyn shared with us a quilt top that was from a pattern she ested for Melissa at Sew Bittersweet Designs.  SHe also brought the scrappy log cabin block quilt top that she pieced together.  This is one of the guild's group quilts.  

Natalie shared with us her new dress that she made herself.  So pretty with socking on the back.  

Bonnie shared with us the add for the Pennsylvania National Quilt Extravaganza in which her quilt is pictured.   Way to go Bonnie!

Jackie shared her Tula Pink quilt that she made for a friend.  She pieced it free form using all pieced of Tula Pink's prince charming line.  

And this beautiful quilt was completed after sitting for years.  Love how the paper pieced hearts have different colors zigzagging through it.
