July Queen Bee Block - Diane

Hi all!  This month's Queen Bee is Diane.  She has come up with a great idea for a block.  She has asked for a Firework block.  (Perfect for July!)  The block is an offset asterisk on a black background using a bright color for the firework.

Here she is modeling her blocks that she made.  (Sorry for the dark photo!)
Instructions:
Use one square of black fabric or black on clack tonal fabric, any size up to 10 inches square.

For the asterisk use strips of fabric, which can be 3/4" to 1.5" in width.  Just use the same width for the entire block.  Use bright colors - solids or patterns.

The tutorials show the block with perfectly cut diagonals - make your cuts as wonky as you like or trim the finished block so the center is askew.  This way the look more like fireworks!

Here is the link to a tutorial on the asterisk block that Diane shared with us.
This link has a tip for keeping the diagonal strips aligned when using wider strips.
And just for fun, one more tutorial.

Here is the first block I made for Diane so everyone can see an up close look at the offset asterisk.  (I forgot to get an up close photo at the meeting of Diane's, sorry. )

Have fun making fireworks!!

July's Meeting, Weds July 10
Diane is moving and is giving up much of her stash of fabrics, quilting tools, books and patterns.  So come early for some freebies!!

Last month we gave Cindy her blocks.  There were so many awesome blocks!

Left to right: Bonnie's block, Michelle's block, Carolyn's Block, Helen's block
 Diane's block, Gloria's block

 Rose's Block, Kat's blocks

We had some great show and tell, too!
Cindy showed off her awesome colorful bag she made in a class.  I can see that as a great beach bag!

Carolyn showed us her Flying Seagulls quilt she made for the Project Quilting Fat Quarter Shop Bonus Challenge.  And she showed us a baby quilt for Orion, her friend's little baby boy.

Helen showed us her Swirly Twirly Milky Way quilt which she won 3rd place with in the Make it Right Challenge.  In the pictures it looks awesome but up close in person, this is even better!  She also showed us a whole collection of beautiful quilts.

These two are the same pattern, but look so different because of their colors!  Like fire and ice.

Then we were shown these beautiful blocks and quilts from Elena.

This baby quilt was so sweet.  Look at all the hand work that went into it.

And look at this beautiful share from Denise!! Not only did we see this gorgeous quilt, but were were shown two awesome bags.  One cross body, great for all the quilting shows and another that opens almost flat that can hold almost everything!

Natalie showed s her first every quilt.  She really jumped in with both feet in using triangles and it looks great.  Can't wait to see how far it has come at the next meeting.

Diane showed us this beautiful colorful quilt that she created.  This is a gift and the little girl will be lucky to have it.  Makes me think of Candy Land.

Michelle made this beautiful applique block for the Applique Society.  I can't believe she made it in just a few days!

Mary showed us this beautiful quilt that she made.  She really quilted all the negative space, my camera does not do it justice.  I love the windmill effect the star has with the colors she chose.

Bonnie made this beautiful colorful quilt.  She practiced quilting fans on this quilt and you can see them on the border. The front is so pretty, but from the back...
you see this totally unexpected burst of color.  She matched her bobbin thread to the top thread as she quilted.

Well that was a lot of pictures from last month.  I am excited to see what we have to share this month.  All the pictures, and more than I have here, are also posted to a set on flickr so you can check them out there.
